AREA Fund Policy Regarding the Asbestos Industry
The AREA Fund will not accept financial or other assistance from an organization that mines or distributes asbestos, nor will it knowingly accept financial or other assistance from any business if a portion of the revenue of that business is derived from the promotion, distribution or sale of asbestos products.
The AREA Fund was created by the Ford family in 2010 to provide a funding source for the wide variety of asbestos-related research, education and advocacy projects that individuals and organizations are undertaking in Canada. Starting August 2011, the fund structure was changed to provide donors with the option of having their donation go directly to funds available for granting, or having it permanently endowed. This flexibility will enable the AREA Fund to make meaningful grants more quickly (thereby actively supporting asbestos-related issues sooner), while still ensuring that there are permanently endowed funds that will continue to grow and generate revenue for this important work over the long-term.
The online donation form allows you to select whether you want your donation to be permanently endowed (AREA Endowment Fund), or to be made available for immediate giving (AREA Fund). It also allows you to make a donation in memory of a loved one and gives you the option to remain anonymous. If you don’t wish to be anonymous, we will add your name to our Thank You page.
Mail-in Donations - If you prefer to make a donation by cheque, please mail your donation to the address below, make your cheque payable to the Vancouver Foundation, and write “AREA Fund” or “AREA Endowment Fund” in the memo line. You can also request that your donation be made in tribute/memory of a loved one. If you don’t ask to be anonymous, we will add your name to our Thank You page.
